Hello and Welcome!
The Rosary is the Catholic Church’s seminal prayer and highlights twenty events known as “mysteries” in the life of Jesus of Nazareth and his mother Mary. While many Rosary books have been produced since the prayer’s inception, the art in such books remains regional and almost exclusively Western European.
Since the Catholic Church is a universal church with members from all continents, this diversity should also be reflected in the Rosary books. This website has been created to showcase worldwide sacred art in connection with the Rosary mysteries. Images are drawn from the rosary book One Mother, One Family : A Scriptural Meditation on the Rosary with Worldwide Sacred Art released in December 2023 by Eastern Christian Publications ( ecpubs.com.) This Rosary book features imagery from early Christian times through the modern era and from wide-ranging localities, including Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. Images from the Eastern Churches as well as a gallery of Madonna figures from around the world are also included. This is the first time in 500 years that such sacred art has been shown in the Rosary book.
This website also hopes to encourage the inclusion of such worldwide art in other Christian prayer books and sacred spaces. The use of this “worldwide art” allows viewers to truly see the Christian faith as universal and to see Jesus and Mary as sharing in our humanity.
Notes:
1. The term “sacred worldwide art’” as used on this website is not limited to that which hangs on a wall or occupies space in a church, museum, private home or elsewhere. Each person who has walked or is walking the face of the earth is also “living” sacred worldwide art because God is present in each person.
2. New image submissions are invited from website viewers. Please see Galleries / New Submissions for further information.
