Rolando Lujan

Deacon Rolando Lujan is the artist-creator behind the prominent mural of St. Oscar Romero located at the Columban Mission Center in El Paso, Texas. The mural, completed in 2013, captures Romero as a figure of spiritual strength and moral courage. It gained notable recognition—Ignatian Solidarity Network reported that Lujan was invited to embellish the work further by painting a halo over Romero during a U.S. House of Representatives celebration of the saint, emphasizing the piece’s symbolic resonance and Lujan’s role in shaping it.

The Columban Mission Center, where this artwork resides, is a hub for engagement with border‑area issues such as migration, poverty, and human rights. As a missionary‑oriented venue, it hosts educational programs and reflective workshops inviting groups to experience the realities of life on the U.S.–Mexico border.

Lujan’s mural, prominent within this context, serves as a visual testament to the Mission’s dedication to social justice and its embodiment of Romero’s legacy: solidarity with the marginalized and prophetic witness to the dignity of the oppressed.
